Open air museum of real life windmills just outside Amsterdam
Windmills/ Cosy 19th century village/ Homemade cheese, mustard and honey
I think everyone would agree that the Netherlands is famous for it’s windmills, however, when you visit Amsterdam now, you might only see one or two of them. If you would like to see more, or even go inside and explore how they work, no worries, we got you! Just 50min away by bus from Amsterdam you will find a cosy little village called Zaanse Schans, this village serves as an open air museum for the windmills and the traditional dutch culture of making cheese, chocolate, mustard, honey, jams and more.
You can walk around the windmills, and some are even open for you to step inside and explore how they work. Each windmill has its own fascinating story, which you can learn about either by reading the informative displays or chatting with the friendly local owners.
The charming little town feels like it’s frozen in time, with its 19th century traditional dutch houses, old shops and vintage signs, it really feels like stepping into the past. Each house is beautifully decorated with flowers and traditional dutch artifacts. The canal crossing the village makes this place feel even more fairytale like. It is truly the best place to see the traditional dutch landscape and take photos.
Once you’re there, you must visit the local souvenir shops. They sells variety of cheeses (some I have never seen before), chocolates, homemade mustard, jams, meat and more. It’s a real treat!
